Biography

Dr Elaine Miles is a Melbourne based practicing artist who works in Installation, Sculpture and Performance. Her professional networks, exhibitions, commissions and residency successes are extensive both within Australia and overseas.

Those who have commissioned Elaine’s artworks include high quality public venues and organizations such as The Sydney Arts Festival, The National Museum of Singapore, wPS1 art radio (an affiliate of PS1 gallery/MOMA New York), The City of Wyndham, Roulette Experimental Sound Space (New York), Melbourne Recital Centre Inaugural opening, Federation Square, Wagga Wagga Regional Art Gallery, (The National Glass Centre) and various state run Craft Councils and State run Regional Galleries.

Elaine holds degrees in Ceramic Design, Applied Arts (Hons), Fine Arts (Masters) and a PhD in Fine Arts.  Miles has over five years of lecturing experience from Monash University.

Elaine has taken up residencies in Germany, USA and Asia for up to three months at a time.

Miles completed her first major permanent outdoor art sculpture commission in 2012 within the City of Wyndham. Elaine Miles is the winner of the 2008 Civic Choice Award in the prestigious Melbourne Prize for Urban Sculpture Awards. Her sculptural installations have also been included in several National Sculpture Competitions including The Melbourne Prize for Urban Sculpture, Sculpture by the Sea Bondi & Cottesloe, Yering Station Outdoor Sculpture Award, Stanthorpe Regional Gallery Sculpture Awards, The Hutchins Art Prize,  Works on Paper (Tasmania), RFC Glass Prize Australian Touring Exhibition, and The Toowoomba Biennial Acquisitive Award & Exhibition (NSW).

Elaine Miles has an extensive history collaborating with various artists, musicians, performers and photographers and has received a significant amount major grants and scholarships successes both individually and collectively. These successes include support for Development – Australia Council, Inter-Arts -Australia Council and Travel Grant – Ian Potter Foundation, International Touring – Arts Victoria, Presentation -Arts Victoria, Creation – Arts Victoria, Development – Melbourne City Council. She has also received research support through Monash University with an Australian Postgraduate Award Scholarship, Postgraduate TravelGrant Award, Postgraduate Conference Organizers Grant.

Elaine’s artwork often reflects her interaction and interest in the history of glass and craft. Dr Miles’ specialty is to adopt various crafts practices and to re-contextualise the meaning of quotidian objects within her artwork. Miles’ artwork is included in the National Art Glass Collection at Wagga Wagga Regional Art Gallery in NSW and in the Stonnington Museum of Art collection, Deakin University and numerous private collections worldwide.

Elaine Miles artwork has been of interest to and critically acclaimed within major feature articles in several newspapers Internationally and Nationally over the years including The New York Sun (USA), Atlantic Press (USA), Glass Design (USA), The Hindi Press, The Age – Robert Nelson, The Age – My Space, The Age -News Features, The Age – Music and The Age Domain sections, The Sydney Morning Herald (NSW), The Herald Sun – news features and home section and at The Melbourne Weekly Times. She has had significant feature articles in most major Australian Home Magazines including Belle, Vogue Living and Harpers BAZAAR. As a principal artist as part of her Glass Percussion Project collaborations her glass and artist interviews have been the feature of Sunday Arts and an ABC TV documentary for a commission at ‘Intermezzo’ at Federation Square and on radio ABC National, 938 live Singapore, 3rrr, 3mbs and joy fm in relation to her installations and various performance/hybrid art events. Miles’ installations and performance art has appeared on most major TV stations around Australia and Regional Victorian as well as Asian TV including channel news Asia.
